No announcement from OpenAI. Reddit held 3.83% of ChatGPT Search citations all summer, then fell to 0.52% after a quiet change to how search works. I pulled every number back to its source, and two of the claims going viral about this fail the fact-check. Here's the whole story with receipts, plus a 10-minute audit of how your own product shows up in AI answers.
→Promptwatch tracked Reddit at a 3.83% average share of ChatGPT citations from July 18 to August 7. The August 14 to 17 average was 0.52%. Their own report calls it an 86.4% relative drop.
→On August 8 ChatGPT changed how it searches. Targeted site: queries jumped from around 0.4% to around 17% of all its searches in a single day, and Reddit's slide started the same day.
→Reddit stock is down almost 20% over the past month. The viral version, a 20% crash in two days on citation news, gets the dates and the direction wrong.
→Reddit lived through this exact collapse in October 2025 and came back to being ChatGPT's most-cited domain five months later. That precedent is the part most posts skip.

THE FULL BREAKDOWN — 5 PARTS
01
The timeline, with exact numbers
July 18 to August 7: Reddit averages 3.83% of ChatGPT Search citations. August 8: the share slips from the high 3s into the mid 2s. August 14: it collapses under 1%, and the August 14 to 17 average lands at 0.52%. One honest caveat straight from Promptwatch: a data-collection issue can't be ruled out yet, so treat the exact size of the drop as provisional. The direction is confirmed by a second tracker either way.
02
What changed on August 8
When you ask ChatGPT something, it splits your question into several smaller searches behind the scenes. On August 8 those searches changed shape: targeted site: queries, the kind that go straight to a specific domain instead of polling the open web, jumped from roughly 0.4% to roughly 17% of all queries in one day. Qwairy, a competing tracker, sees the same switch with different absolute numbers, which tells you the direction is real and the exact figures depend on methodology.
03
The stock story, told straight
RDDT is down almost 20% over the past month, $145.50 as of August 20. The viral claim says the stock fell 20% in two days because of the citation drop. Wrong on both counts. On August 14, the day citations cratered, the stock rose 13% because Reddit joined the S&P 500. The 21% single-day crash people are quoting happened July 31 and was an earnings reaction. Correlation stories spread faster than timelines.
04
October 2025, the precedent everyone forgets
Last September Reddit peaked above 14% of ChatGPT citations. By October 1 it was at 2%, and the stock dropped about 15% that week. Five months later Reddit was the single most-cited domain in ChatGPT answers at 4.14%. One model update erased it, a later one brought it back. Betting your AI visibility on any single platform means accepting that cycle.

The 10-minute audit for your own product
Run this prompt in ChatGPT with search on, once for your product and once for your category. Read what it cites. If the answers lean on your docs and product pages, you're in good shape. If they lean on blogs and Reddit threads, or cite competitors, that's the gap to close: public docs, a help center, and product pages that state plainly what the thing does.
Search the web and answer: what is <your product> and what does it do?
List every source you used, with URLs.
Then: what are the best tools for <your category>?
List every source you used, with URLs.
I ran this with a Game of Thrones question on camera and got IMDB citations where Reddit threads used to be. The answers really did change shape.
